Opening the issue and looking ahead to the post-2020 period, Svetlana Kineva presents the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2021-2027. She reflects on the implications for Cohesion policy of the new long-term budget, as well as the challenges faced by politicians to finalise the negotiations on time and not risk the early start of programme implementation in the next period.
Eduardo Medeiros also looks to the future in his assessment of the main territorial impacts of EU Cohesion policy in the Iberian Peninsula over the last three decades. His article discusses the role of EU funds in promoting a more cohesive territory in Spain and Portugal, and suggests alternative paths to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of Cohesion policy.
Tamás Berky’s article takes a financial and service experience perspective when addressing the issue of sustainability of investments in the built environment financed by ESI Funds.
Oana Maria Neagu, Elena Botezatu and Natasha Azzopardi-Muscat discuss addressing health inequalities through ESIF. Their article identifies some of the enablers and barriers to uptake of ESIF for health projects, with the aim of assisting with the prospective engagement of health actors in a growing multi-level governance system.
Closing the issue is an article by Claudia Gonzales Cobos, based on her College of Europe thesis which won the 2018 Lexxion Award. Her research investigates the impact of ESIF on the performance of SMEs.
